Childhelp: Field Day 2009

What started as a day to teach children about the health benefits of jump roping developed into a full day of events and fun for children at Childhelp's Alice C. Tyler Village.

Following the successful partnering with Childhelp—a national non-profit organization dedicated to helping victims of child abuse and neglect through prevention, intervention, and treatment—and loads of fun with the children who reside at Childhelp’s Alice C. Tyler Village this past holiday season, CapitalSource employees envisioned planning a day of jump roping with former U.S. Olympian and jump rope training expert Buddy Lee in the summer of 2009.

On June 25, 2009, CapitalSource employees hosted their second field day at the village where Buddy Lee delivered an inspirational speech, held a jump roping exhibition, and taught proper jump roping techniques to the children. Due to the generosity of ServiceCorps and individual CapitalSource employees, each child walked away—or should we say jumped away—with their own jump rope and enthusiasm for the sport.

What started as a day to teach children about the fun and health benefits of jump roping developed into a field day of events. Joined by Bethesda Dragon team members—a local soccer team ranked sixth in the nation—and ten high school-aged students, CapitalSource employees manned five stations: football, soccer, dance freeze tag, cupcake decorating, and face painting. The resulting smiles, laughter, and boundless energy on the part of the children were reward enough for all who volunteered.
